Track names etc.

Ahhh.... I like the new decent in the valley Didge (-and I believe I owe a thanks to a few nicely placed rocks Freddie & co). And it's only going to get better.
Didn't quite manage to run all the Didge cobweb trail network but I ended up in the right place...

Which brings me to a point- how about revamping some of the trail names. We need to name the new decent route (as long as it not called the "something colour" tag.)

I think the blue/white/red tag tracks are worthy of re-naming.
Also some of the loops that are regularly ridden deserve names.
I know some already have names. Super8, Old Faithful etc.

Lets get creative people and share some trail info and make it a bit easier to brag about your weekend epic death march rides. ie. Super8 in under 3 hours or something???

ps. might also make it easier when you call up your mates to organise a medi-evac if you can tell them you were half way down the "memory lane' decent when you crashed and now don't know where (or perhaps who) you are.

Post up....

yep, freddie took me down the new freeride/decent last sunday and it is a little intimidating the first time.
one of the steepest bits of the scarp ive ridden.. a real GRAVITY DROPPER!

Smoothpete's picture

mmmm..... the Dropper has lots of connotations that might be apt for such a decent.

Firstly - Super 8 in under 3 hours? I would be impressed. I hate that deathmarch of a ride.
Next - should we ask the moderator / webmaster for a new forum listing where regular rides / new rides and their names can be discussed and finally posted?

As Smoothpete has pointed out, we already have Old Faithful, Super 8, The Old School Loop (and I do believe The "Old" Old School Loop if you take out the Holy Grail bits and Steggles' bit at the top of The Whore), and of course who could forget - The Jimmy Ride.

Newcomers and regular riders alike could really benefit from a bit of this type of info, especially since many of these names are only known amongst the "scene" - which doesn't do much to help the noobs.

My two cents (and I even managed to write it in proper english..)

Mountain Bike? - I think I own one of those - what do they look like?

As of Thursday, the record for Super 8, including stops, is now 2hr 33min. Little Timmy Bennett is flying at the moment.

Just a question though, should it be proper English?

Damn that little hobbit!!

As for the English versus english thing, I'm not sure. I think English refers to the nationality and english is the language that is spoken. I'm sure Mandy will be able to tell us. Perhaps the language is known as English also, in which case I am happy to take schooling from one who would know better. Smiling

Ride this Sunday James?

Mountain Bike? - I think I own one of those - what do they look like?

Of course Amanda checked. English is the language and the people...

Ride Sunday? I'd be glad to go racing with you. See you at Mundaring! Or perhaps you'd rather come out and do practise laps on Saturday morning.

Ahh racing is it? - Greystones? I'll ride up to watch. I just rolled my ute on the way to work this morning, so I'm a bit bruised. Will bring photos so everyone who knows me can have a laugh. Smiling

Being a noobie it is difficult to find out where all the tracks are. How about getting some of these rides you have listed logged with the gps units a lot of the guys are now running and sticking them on this site for all? That would make it heaps easier for us new bubs to take a look at them and get really hooked? It's a bit daunting to even think about going for a ride with you speed freaks but if we could share the same tracks that would be awesome.

I did a ride with Didge the other day which incorporated some new stuff, some of which we will call Fast Freddies Drop (as he was the first to ride all the way down it). Is this the gravity dropper?

Track names would be good. I don't know half of the names you are talking about, although I am sure I've ridden the tracks.

Smoothpete's picture

I would really like it if some of the loops were named and logged on maps.
Would definitely be a great resource for the sight.
As has been said- kind of hard for the new guys to hook up with the race brigade to learn routes cause by the first turn they're out of sight.

Naming tracks after people who've found them, built them, dominated them, crashed on them all works for me.
I guess we really need to start somewhere on the site where the maps can be posted and then see if there is a name already exists for that route and if not start taking suggestions.

I know of three folk who have put in great track over the years and really deserve some credit rather than just the colour of a tag for the name of their track (unless they prefer that name)- or worse still have their track trashed altogther - although it seems to be growing back - well at least part of it.

My two cents on the " Gravity Dropper" is that the "gravity" should be dropped (the DH kids might be a bit let down if they actually rode it). (ie could go with the name "Dropper" cause it drops you into the valley) - I think the name for that trail should refer to the route taken from the carpark all the way to the valley otherwise we'll end up with a billion names refering to various two minute sections of track.

ps. doesn't the big "E" and the little "e" depend more on the context when it's refering to the language ie. "An English person speaks english" "The English language is spoken in Australia (well, by some anyway"

We bumped into Maxfacta on a ride last night and discussed the issue of creating a track database online. He raised the very valid point that it wouldn't be a good idea to have maps on the site, as most of the tracks that are created / ridden are not necesarily approved and legal.

However I am all for creating a track name database via word of mouth. I guess anyone that actually puts the hard yards in to create a track should get to name it. They can then pass the name on to everyone they show the track to.

Good point. Putting the club at risk is not a good idea. What if they went onto another internet space? Such as an agreed youtube space or the like. Get the maps with no risks to the club? There must be someway to do it? It would be such an awesome resource. Bicycling.com do something similar.
Mike.

What the committee has decided to do is build a "Community Trails Resources" area. This will be an area for website members to create content regarding the rides, meeting points etc they wish to share with others. The club will not be responsible for moderating this content, or vetting it for 'legality'. Posting information about where you ride is done at your own risk, and you may be incriminating yourself if you post a trail
that is on illegal singletrack or goes into disease risk area, which could result in prosecution by DEC. Remember, this website is open to be read by the public. If the DEC request us to remove information about an illegal trail, we will comply.

Now, the question remains as to what form this "Community Trails Resources" area shall take.
This simplest (for me to implement, and for everybody to use) would be just another forum. But a list of posts isn't the greatest way to collect and disseminate information.
Better would be a wiki-style setup. This is a collaboration of everybodys input. So we might have an article about the Kalamunda Circuit, which everybody can edit. This can be implemented too, but will require a little more knowledge on the part of the contributors (in order to format it, make it look good, create new articles, etc).

Has anyone been looking at the entries under 'XC Race Tracks' (under the Trails section on the left)? This is the sort of thing I'm talking about.

exelent idea with the wikipeidia thing, i would love to get it going.

Earlier in the post, someone refered to the trouble the club would be placed in by be seen to endorse or approve the single track that is presently unrecorded but may not be approved of by the land owner. - fair statement.

Why not log locations on a 3rd party website such as singletrack.com ? There are a handful of tracks listed for Australia (eastern states). I have not examined it in detail but it appears you can also list a map, eg google earth, with accompanying notes etc.

just a thought ........ comments ??

oldmandave's picture

the Blue Tag and Red Tag trails already have proper names.

Please do not post the details of these trails on any forums / sites.

Once the remaining sections are completed the names will be posted.

I've been working on cateloging the trails - since I'm still new(ish) to the area, I'm pretty prone to getting lost. I've got some GPS data of the area, but it's not complete (yet). I still have to log these super8, Freddie's drop and the cobweb trails, but this is what I have so far - (I'm diggin' these names BTW): ((Sorry - I had the map up for a bit, but due to concerns over land managment issues, I've pulled it. Maybe I'll post it on singletrack.com))

That bit of single track on the West side of MW Rd after you come out of blue tag. Cringe worthy if you know why.
