Hi guys,
I have recently purchased an 07 Giant Alias, I have a couple q's regarding computers, lights and pedals.
I know a lot comes down to how much i want to spend, but being a student i don't have large amounts to spend but still want gear that won't crap itself when its needed most.
1) Is a wireless computer as reliable? what computers can you recommend below $120?
2) I won't be doing large amounts of night riding, but when i do it'll be in the bush. Are the high powered LED's the way to go? they seem light as well as bright, but they also allow long burn times. any reccommendations for under $80?
3) regarding pedals, i will be doing a fair lot of road/soft trail riding compared to the harder tracks, are the SPD pedals the way to go? they don't have universal cleats do they? you need to get the cleats that match the pedals then screw them into the shoe? is that the way it works?
Cheers in advance guys,
hope to see you out there,
Ash

IMO,
I'd save the cycle computer till you've graduated and are rolling in cash. I'd class ithem as an accessory and not an essential.
If you've only got $80 dollars for a light and you want to ride off road I don't think your going to find anything that is up to the task. However LED is the way to go. (If you save 120 on a cycle computer and add your 80 in you might find something trail worthy.)
People who've started riding in flats and then change to clipless end up being better riders that those who've never ridden flats (IMO - no flames please). But.... if I had to choose a life time of flats or clipless it would be clipless no argument. Any yes, SPDs are the way to go. Screw em into your shoes and get SPD compatible pedals (which most are) - adjust the tension to suit your liking and pedal away (and then fall over).( Well, for the first few times anyway)
Happy trails.
Pete
Cheers for the feedback Pete
Take it easy

If you are crafty and into electronics, you can make a very good led light for <$200. Check XC forums on Farkin.net.au (or is it just farkin.net?) and look for the lights thread, about page 15 or so there are links to DIY instructions and photo's of one someone has made themselves.
