New Guy starting out, where to go

Hiya pplz of PMBC, I'm 32 yo guy, 108kgs wanting to put tyres on dirt and hopefully have some fun while doing it, are there any vanilla grade trails around the kelmscott area? Those hills must hold some gold for mtb'ers.

Lastly a typical noob question, what are some of the basics that I should take with me on a ride, tools/spares etc...

When you go riding, Bring a spare tube, Pump, and gear to put it on. Take it from me and recent experiences, You DON'T want to be pushing your bike down the track with a busted tube after one run. You will just need to get some tools to take the tire off, Get at any bike shop

Also id buy a camel bag, Especially for summer, get really tired and thirsty while riding, and especially putting it back up the hill.

Other than that there inst much else that you will desperately need for a sick ride
Enjoy

Take a bandage roll and maybe some large bandaids, they weigh nothing. It's inevitable you'll come off at some point and you'll need something to patch yourself up.

go tubless dude the bike shop will set you straight allways let someone know where your riding

its a little bit of a drive but you won't get lost and has enough elevation changes, jumps and drops to hold your interest without being to overwhelming

Cool, thanks for the replies, tools, tubes, hydration and a lil first aid stuff. I never thought of water! no brainer that one.

That bit of track sounds cool Mat, I am a complete noob so this should be a good starting point.

Yeah i might have to give this track a go to. I'm also as green as grass to this game. I went to the goat farm today and it became clear just how green I am within minutes!!! Although i think I might have been playing where the Big guns play! Here I was thinking I would still have my old BMX skills going on......

Yeah the goat farm is not easy... either you are busting your lungs going up hill or screaming downhill.... not much to get your eye in or warm up on.

Try forsyth mill, its a blue level track, fun... once you have got all the a lines down pat there have a poke around Kalamunda ...

As for BMX skillz... yeah i still am looking for mine... been lost for the last year... occasionally i catch a glimps of them ... then they abandon me, usually while flying off a large jump.... ouch!

Awesome mate, cheers for that. I think ill head out there tomorrow and give it a bash. The goat farm didn't to much for my moral!! lol. I would love to do one of these skills clinics but there doesn't appear to be anything in WA?

give Tim or Jo Bennett a call at Kalmunda Cycles, and pester them about a skills course... they have done them in the past.

Cheers Dude,

Really appreciate your help.

Dude, one other thing.. that long push up back up the track can be a killer, so unless ure with a group of mates id bring an Ipod or something like it. Makes the job easier. Bikes were ment to go down hill, definetly NOT up haha

Bikes are made for riding.....although you may find the GF tough keep going and riding up those hills because it will not only improve your fitness but also your technique and trust me after a month or so of doing it you will feel the benefits....as for coming down the GF theres no need to 'fly down' take your time and get a feel for the place because it does offer you some good challenges that will pay dividends in time to come.....

if you dont feel confident to go there by yourself or just want showing around some of the trails either drop me a line and ill be more than happy to meet you out there.

good luck

Hey thanks very much for that,

I have to say I do agree with you on riding up the hills. I think this is definately a sport where the fitter you the more enjoyable it is. I think also maybe I need to try a bit more XC single track riding before I tackle the more harder stuff. Also i have a carbon fibre giant XTC hard tail and it almost felt like the bike was TO light yesterday, at times I felt like I was completely out of control in actually being able to handle the bike, I hit corners to fast, hit the brakes to hard etc etc,. Wrong bike for that type of track I think. Anyway I'm into it and shall keep on giving it a go (unless I kill myself first lol) It was a bit daunting being out there by myself to as there was no one else around, not to mention the heat!!!!! I will try this other place first and see if I can build up a bit more skill and confidence first. I certainly dropped my balls a few times yesterday!!!
